Can ChatGPT Make a Great Drink and is Google a Monopoly?

Important Questions that Everyone is Asking

It was a sunny Saturday afternoon and it had me wondering, "what's in that Transfusion drink again?"  I remember it being delicious but I couldn't remember the exact ingredients.  Vodka was obviously included but the rest of the ingredients were a little fuzzy.

Luckily, a fine gentleman named Al Gore invented the internet a few decades ago, and an answer was only a few keystrokes away. Google's top results (see image below) directed me to Southern Living.  It looks like they've done their homework.

Upon arriving at Southern Living's website, and after some scrolling and dismissing of ads, I found what I was looking for.  Lot's of details, history and the ingredients.

All of this research had me thirsty and wondering ... could ChatGPT do this better or faster?

Can ChatGPT make a great drink?

I asked ChatGPT and below are the results.

The results were fast, simple and to the point.  No extra clicking or scrolling.  It was better than my Google experience.

Is ChatGPT better than Google at Delivering Search Results?

How many times do you search the internet every month?  The average person performs approximately 90 to120 searches per month

What you search for, what you click on and all the related data that is collected is extremely telling about your interests and your intents.  That collected data is a goldmine for big tech companies like Google.

If more people utilize ChatGPT for answers, the impact could mean less traffic for Google.

Does Google have a monopoly on search traffic?

With 25+ years of Marketing experience, I've seen the birth and exponential growth of Google.

Does Google have a monopoly on search traffic?  This is being debated by many and may come down to the courts. Frankly, most people don't care.  I wondered what ChatGPT's answer would be.  As you can see below, the answer was very politically correct.

When searching the same question on Google, the results were interesting and could lead you to conduct your own additional research to form your own opinion.

According to statcounter Global Statistics, Google's Search Engine Market Share Worldwide is 93.17%.

This is clear dominance across the globe.  When anyone asks a question on the internet, over 93% of the time, Google is determining the answer or at least the order of potential answers.

Why is Google's AI Chatbot Tool 'Bard' Slow to Market?

Google's business model is built upon Ad Revenue.  With search dominance in excess of 90%, they own the market.  Their current business model allows them to control all of the traffic, search results, ads shown, data collected, insights gathered and bid pricing models that are implemented. They are not incentivized to change their model to more simply answer questions for users or to overhaul their Search Network and Google Ads Infrastructure.

Google makes money on impressions and clicks.  They need users to search, then click to the advertisers website and then to see impressions across their entire network.  Follow the money.

Let's look at another example.  Below are sample search results from Google for "What's the best washing machine for families?"  In this example below there are many opportunities to generate ad revenue.

In contrast, the ChatGPT results below are more generic in nature but do provide some product recommendations. They do not provide the user with any links to click to purchase.

Microsoft plans to invest billions of dollars in OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT.  Their bet is that consumers will continue to shift to more conversational searches and that ChatGPT will supercharge the backbone of their Bing Search Engine.

The exact use cases for newly emerging AI tools are still to be determined.  Tools that provide users with faster, more useful access to the information they are looking for will ultimately win out.  Google has a huge head start with the majority of users already using their ecosystem.  Microsoft has a huge head start with their investment in OpenAI.  Who will win in the end?  Follow the money.
